TORONTO - Edenwold, a chestnut son of Southern Halo, took an unfamiliar path to achieve victory in Saturday's $135,650 Colin Stakes at Woodbine.

The Ontario-bred, who employed off-the-pace tactics to good effect in his first three career starts, broke sharply from the rail post in the Colin, then battled gamely under sustained pressure throughout the six-furlong feature.

Bred by Gail Wood and Bill Diamant, the two-year-old colt notched his second victory and first added-money triumph, defeating five rivals, including mutuel favourite, Key West Breeze.

Sent off at odds of 7-2, Edenwold, under David Clark, and Key West Breeze, with Todd Kabel in the irons, duked it out through early fractions of :22:47 and :45.48.

As the field straightened for home, Key West Breeze took a brief lead, before Clark and Edenwold fought back along the inside for a one-length score.

Clark, aboard Edenwold for the first time, crossed the wire with the Jim and Alice Sapara-owned colt in a time of 1:11.04.

"He broke very comfortably," said Clark, who picked up his eighth added-money triumph in 2005. "He went on and finished up well. They would have had to fight to get by him."

Trainer Josie Carroll wasn't expecting to see Edenwold so close to the early pace, but was pleased at the final result.

"I trusted David's judgment," said Carroll. "When I spoke to David this morning, I said my concern was that there was a very fast horse (Key West Breeze) coming in from out of town. If that one gets away from us, we might be in trouble. He (Edenwold) has improved every start."

Edenwold earned $82,250 for the victory, boosting his lifetime earnings to $156,150.

He paid $9.60, $3.20 and $2.50 across the board. Key West Breeze ($2.20, $2.10) was second, while Top Authority ($2.50) finished third. The 1-4 exactor paid $21.60. A 1-4-3 triactor returned $44.60.
